Guess that my previous post a bit too boring and un-interesting to read 😛 Reading too many bad news can be hazardous to health and cause mental damage. With what is happening in this country, the odd of getting brain damage is definitely very high. Oh, if you want to read feel good news, just grab a copy of either The Star, NST, Berita Harian, Harian Metro, Utusan Malaysia, Sinar… 😛

CNY is coming!!! I am going back to Sarawak this Friday! Depart from KLIA at 8.50pm to Kuching, flying MAS this time. (Baru ada class beb! Haha!) It was because when I did my ticket booking, Air Asia ticket was more expensive then MAS. Damn it, a week after I booked mine, Air Asia came out with cheaper tickets. $@^%^%!!!

It is been a long long time since I back to my hometown. The last time I went back Sarawak was to attend a friend’s wedding, back in March? And oh-mai-goat! This time I go back, I am already an uncle! Yes, that friend gave birth last December. That’s fast! 😀  So how I am going to spend my CNY holiday? First thing first.

I am tired of uploading photos 😛 I actually want to put up more photos of what I want to eat and drink, but then it will suck all the bandwidth 😛 Lazy lah… You get my point. I want to eat… eat… and eat… first thing I will do when I land in Sarawak! Muahahahhahah! I shall continue on the rest of the things I plan to do during CNY holidays in my next post. Malaysia’s competitiveness: Anwar accuses Abdullah of “misleading”

PETALING JAYA, Jan 30 (ES) – Former deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has accused the current premier of making a “deliberately misleading” claim that Malaysia is currently ranked eight in the world in term of competitiveness.

Anwar who is also former finance minister said “closer examination” of the data released by World Competitiveness Report 2007, revealed that the claim was only true within the category of countries with a population of 20 million or more.

In a press conference held here Jan 29, Anwar who is also the opposition People Justice Party (KeADILan) de facto leader said Malaysia “in fact” was ranked only 23rd in the world.

“Fifteen of the twenty two countries ranked above Malaysia in 2007 have populations of less than 20 million people, while seven of the twenty two have populations exceeding 20 million,” he noted.

Competitiveness is plummeting, Anwar countered

He noted that Malaysia’s competitiveness had worsened compared to 2006 from the same report. Malaysia was ranked 22nd in 2006 and its best ever ranking was at 17th place in 1997.

Anwar said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi’s decision to resort to such “misdirection” was a “weak attempt” to hide the fact that Malaysia’s economic fundamentals have weakened progressively under his government.

He contended that the country competitiveness “is plummeting” and cautioned Abdullah to make a comparison to Singapore and Hong Kong which currently were ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively.

“Malaysia is clearly in need of a higher caliber leadership if we were to realize our full potential as an economy of global stature,” he said.

Let us see how they spinned it this time. I am so furious now since they treated Malaysian readers like dumbass.

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia improved its rankings in government efficiency and world competitiveness last year compared with eight years ago, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said. 

The Prime Minister, quoting statistics obtained by the World Competitiveness Yearbook released by the Swiss-based IMD (one of the world’s leading business schools), said Malaysia’s economic performance last year was sixth in the world. 

The ratings, of countries with a population of more than 20 million, also put Malaysia as the world’s 19th leading trading nation. 

In terms of government efficiency, Abdullah said Malaysia was ranked sixth last year, up from eighth in 2000. 

“We ranked better than Britain, Germany, Thailand, Spain, Japan, Russia and France. Not bad, huh?” he noted, adding, however, that China, Canada, the United States, India and Taiwan fared better than Malaysia.

Malaysia’s business efficiency was “especially good”, he said, with the ranking climbing to fourth from 13th last year. Abdullah said Malaysia’s world competitiveness ranking improved to the eighth position last year from 10th in 2000. 

He said the seven countries which did better were the United States, Canada, Australia, China, Germany, Taiwan and Britain. 

Saying “Malaysia Boleh,” Abdullah said Malaysians should improve in their work and perform even better than last year.

I was curious how the hell Malaysia end up ranked in the 6th place for government effiency, so based on the little information in the newspaper I did some googling at the very website of the school that came up with the ranking, which is IMD. A quick search gave me this.

Well, I have no data about government efficiency ranking and I am going to lay that off, but I want to quote this :

“Abdullah said Malaysia’s world competitiveness ranking improved to the 8th position last year from 10th in 2000.”

The World Competitiveness Scoreboard Report I posted said we have slipped from 22 to 23 last year from the previous year. Now which page is this he reading from? Or did he get the facts right? Or is he manufacturing information for the gullible Malaysian public?Penipu besar. And he went to compare last year ranking with 2000?? Why?

Now Pak Lah, please tell me we are comparing the with 8 years ago not last year? Is there anything you are trying to hide?  Anyone with a brain in statistics will tell you, you have to compare year-on-year, the previous year being the most significant. In this regard, Malaysia’s world competitiveness has slipped from 22 to 23 in 2007, so we are worse off. We are worse off than Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and little known Estonia.

The PM does not seem to understand that Malaysians in general are not bothered about research reports that tell us we have improved in government efficiency from 8th to 6th place and has beaten countries like Germany and UK in this survey. People are curiously disbelieving the research methodology. Anyone who has been to UK or France will tell you how fast and responsive their public service is.

People are interested in these issues instead:

1. Why we pay more for oil when we earn a lot from oil -where is the money going?
2. Why is chicken, flour, roti-canai and essential items for living so expensive?
3. Why is salary not rising in step with inflation?
4. Why is our regional competitiveness worse than our neighbours?
5. Why is the government so corrupt?
6. Why is the judiciary so biased, weak and a lame duck for the government?
7. Why is crime getting so bad in Malaysia?
8. Why are politicians getting so fat like Zakaria and not in jail?

Abdullah was born to a prominent religious family. His father, Ahmad Badawi, was a prominent religious figure and UMNO member. Badawi’s maternal grandfather, Ha Su-chiang (also known as Hassan), was a Chinese Muslim who came from Sanya in Hainan.[2]

Abdullah is a former student of Bukit Mertajam High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Islamic Studies from the University of Malaya in 1964. He originally wished to pursue a degree in Economics but did not meet the required standard after failing his statistics paper.

We have The Matrix Trilogy and Lord of The Ring Trilogy. In true Malaysia Boleh spirit, we now have Lingam-gate Trilogy! Aye! Aye! You probably already watched Part 1 and Part II of Lingam-gate. Now you are going to watch Part III of Lingam-gate.  I have no idea if they will come out with Part IV, I guess that depends on the viewers’ responses. Lingam proves himself as a farking good actor (and liar) in the last 2 episodes and in the latest episode as well, I bet many Malaysians anxiously waiting to see more of his great performance.

You are only…you are supposed to be consulted, not to be approved. You see the point or not? The constitution said consult. I suppose to consult my father before I marry, I consulted him, he disagreed but still I married!

But this bugger is sometimes a bit scared. Ah…I must play shadow from the behind. Nobody should know I know you. Then you can help more. But people, see you know more, like Eusoff Chin, because I met him in New Zealand, became a problem. But if I didn’t meet him in New Zealand, it’s a… no problem.

KUALA LUMPUR: Fifty-six people, including several opposition and non-governmental organisation (NGO) leaders, were arrested for attending a rally to protest against rising prices of fuel and other essential items.

City police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Muhamad Sabtu Osman said police obtained an order from the magistrate’s court to stop the rally by the Coalition Against Inflation (Protes).

He said police dispersed the rally without using any force.

Among those arrested were five members of Protes named in the court order: PAS treasurer Dr Hatta Ramli, PKR information chief Tian Chua, Arutchelvam Subramaniam, Simon Oii and DAP leader Ronnie Liew.Others included Parti Sosialis Malaysia pro tem chairman Dr Mohd Nasir Hashim, PAS vice-president Mohamad Sabu, PAS think-tank head Dr Zulkifli Ahmad and Tian Chua’s secretary Ginie Lim.

Malaysiakini journalist Syed Jamal Zahiid was detained for “asking too many questions.’

Only in Malaysia, if you ask too many questions, you will be detained. I thought that only happened in communist and facist ruled countries? What is wrong with this country? Is it wrong to voice out your concern on price hike? It is not like people are gathering to topple the government. They wanted they government to listen and do something, not side-stepping or instructed the mainstream media to blackout all the bad news just because election is around the corner. Have you noticed lately all the news in the MSM (mainstream media) singing praises for the government and suddenly we have tons of good news? Other than the daily jokes provided by Lingam and the Pussified Royal Commission. What a bunch of pondans can do but to provide humor and drama for Malaysians. And we claps…….

 I love cooking shows. I love to watch the food preparations, the techniques and the skillful chef on the roll. I love cooking shows so much. How much? Well, just say that if I am in a middle of watching a movie, or whatever channel on tv and when it is commercial time, like usual I will flip the channels, if I happened to see a cooking show showing I will stop and my eyes glued to the channel. 😛 Er, yeah I watch Martha Stewart’s show every now and then.

When I say cooking shows, I do not mean those shows where the host(s) go around and visit some restaurants or any eating places introducing good food. I find the emphasize is not of the food but the host(s). Most of the time the show will be busy focusing on the host(s) and their stupid jokes rather than the food preparation, cooking and serving. And the host(s) only have good words about the food they eat. Ceh!

I can cook, that I am proud of. I learned to cook when I was 11 or 12. My parents were working and I am the eldest one. It started with me preparing the food to be cooked by my mom. Cutting and washing the vegetables, onions, ‘butcher-ing’ the meats, cracking eggs and put it at the kitchen until my mom came back. I only cooked the rice for it is the easiest thing to do, wash the rice, measure the water level and put it on the stove. My mom would come back in her afternoon break and cook. But after a while, a smartass me thought why not I cooked the food on my own. The first time I cooked on my own, I got a good scolding from my mom. You know lah, along the line ‘later house on fire how?’ After many times cooking, I became the chef of the house! Muahahaha! Whipping dishes for lunch and dinner is not a problem at all for me. I even cook for my friends when I was in university every time we have ‘makan-makan’ gathering. Thank god for that, I do not have to rely on my future wife to do that for me, since it is so damn hard to find girls that can cook. (Pun intended :P)

Back to cooking shows, I love western cooking shows. Westerners, they put a lot of time and efforts into preparation of food and when it is up for serving, damn the food always look so delicious, pretty, sexy and nice! Compare that to Chinese cooking shows it is a bit boring in my opinion. Always fry this and that and you get a dish. LOL! Or maybe just they way they present the food preparation is slightly different compare to their Western counterparts. And the latest Western cooking shows, they always put in like in a competition format, bit a like reality show so it is fun to watch. You feel the exhilaration, the adrenalin pumping as the contestants rushing to prepare their food. Remember Iron Chef?

How about Malay cooking shows? Er, I hate that one guy, Chef Ismail. Always pimp some products in his shows. It is such a turn off. Then he will be on another show, pimping another products. I understand, he wants to ‘cari makan’ but don’t you think it is a bit unprofessional for him to do that? Everything use ready to cook food packets, crap! And you call that cooking shows. I love Chef Wan’s show. He got style, and he’s good at talking. At least he is not that annoying compare to Chef Ismail. (Oh I definitely will get some bashing from his supporters now… but I doubt any makcik-makcik reading this blog haha!) Yes, I am a fan of Chef Wan. 😀 But many Malay cooking shows really lack in the presentation department.

Malay food is tasty and I love Malay food, but when you watch it on television, the food they prepare just don’t look good to eat haha! Something with the colour of the food? A bit too monotonous. I happened to watch a cooking competition showed on tv during ‘puasa’ time, the competition was held in Plaza Alam Sentral, Shah Alam I think. Man, the dishes the contestants came up with seriously didn’t look tasty at all for me. For a cooking competition, the standard should be higher. Argh!

Here are some cooking shows that I love :

The Naked Chef – Jamie Oliver

ops!! that’s not him. sorry 😛

Who do not know Jamie Oliver, nicknamed ‘The Naked Chef’? Go and shove your head in your arse. The ‘Naked’ refers to to the simplicity of Oliver’s recipes, and has nothing to do with nudity. This is one cool guy and with good heart too. He established the Fifteen charity restaurant where he trained 15 disadvantaged young people to work in the hospitality industry. He also behind the campaign to improve the standard of Britain’s school meals. Nice chap heh?

Hell’s Kitchen – Gordon Ramsay

Hell’s Kitchen is the name of a cooking-based reality show. I like Gordon Ramsay for his no nonsense approach in the kitchen, and he is well know for his profanity, which is quite frequent of the show. Ramsay once heard replying to a rude customer who asked for more pumpkin by saying, “Right. Well, I’ll get you more pumpkin and I’ll ram it right up your fucking arse! Would you like it whole or diced?” LOL! The censor board must be having tough time doing their job to make sure the show is suitable for family to watch.

Iron Chef

Arise Iron Chef!!! LOL! The best part in the show is when they revealed the iron chefs… It is a bit too bombastic and full of drama, and presented like a game show and that is so fun to watch!! And the ingredients they used in the show always very exotic and expensive. Japanese sure do know their stuffs. Yapun Banzai! This is one of my favourite cooking show of all time.

The commentary is enlightening and allows the viewer to see what is happening in the kitchen; it also serves as entertainment, as friendly banter is shared among the four commentators.” (wikipedia)

There are many more cooking shows I love to watch such as Celebrity Cooking Showdown, The F-Word, The French Chef, Cooking For Love, Everyday Italian (this one got hot lady chef – Giada De Laurentii to watch, who will miss it? :P) and many more. Last words, for the ladies, ‘the best way to a man’s heart, is through his stomach’ and for gentlemen out there, ‘the way to a girl’s heart is through her boyfriend’s stomach?’ Haha! Well it is a bonus if you can cook, so you know you will not die of hunger and it is always nice to be able to cook for yourself or our loved ones. The satisfactions come from looking at the happy faces and hearing praises for the food you prepared is hard to describe. (Provided you can cook well LOL!)

I just came back from watching Cloverfield. I wanted to watch American Gangster but my friend wanted to watch Cloverfield, so being a good friend and since the movie is produced by J.J. Abrams (Forever Young, Armageddon, Mission Impossible 3, Alias, Lost), I thought it will be good. Here is what I have to say after watching the movie.

1. Some of you may get the feeling of nauseous, dizziness, disoriented after watching the movie. Why?

“On the night of May 22, 2009, in which five friends throw a going-away party, a giant monster attacks Manhattan. The film depicts their attempts to survive the attack, presented as a recording from their hand-held video camera.” (wikipedia).

The film was edited to look like it was filmed with one hand-held camera, including jump cuts similar to ones found in home movies. Hence you get many shaky shots, the camera moving violently from one frame to another. If you watch The Blair Witch Project before, you get what I am trying to say.

The shaky-cam is pretty annoying, like it is purposely done that way, kinda cheap and crappy. I know it is meant to look like a home video, but the movements of the camera is too much. On my way out of the cinema, I saw a girl vomited. She was walking in front of me, then suddenly she stopped and just uwekkkkkkkssss, vomited there. Poor girl. Pretty bad heh?

I quote : “I-thought-my-eyeballs-were-bleeding exercise in visual disorientation.” (Rotten Tomato)

2. But the guy in the movie, despite his lousy filming with his forever shaking hands, he managed to film everything! Good war photographer material. How the fark you would be able to film everything when you are supposed to be running like crazy saving your ass from been eaten by the monster. Believe me, he just that good! At no time does he failed to keep an image on the screen. In the dark subway where they are attacked, when the girl he is been hot for is attacked and in need for help, while climbing from one very tall building to another, when they were in the helicopter which later crashed after it was whacked by the monster. Best photographer you can find 🙂

3. The most repeated dialogue in the movie is ‘Oh my god!’. You finished watching the movie, the dialogue still stuck there in your head, playing like a broken record. I lost count how many times they blurted it out on screen. OMG this, OMG that. After a while listening to that, it become super annoying and torturing, making you want to strangle yourself to death. It is like hearing Paris Hilton saying ‘It is hot!’

4. The movie reminds me of 9/11 attacks. Yes, bad taste. Buildings crumbling down, people running and screaming, emerging through a cloud of asbestos, shaky footages, very reminiscent of 9/11. I find it emotionally disturbing. I was in front of the television watching when the 9/11 attacks happened.

5. The whole story would not happened if this one guy, Rob didn’t try to find his girl. He slept with the girl, which is his best friend and then dumped her. He said something nasty to her at the party when she left with another guy. Then the giant ‘scary’ creature plot came, he regretted and decided to look for her at her apartment, and getting his friends killed in the process. How cliche heh? Or dumb? Or romantic? Haha!!!

6. Hmm, it is a monster movie, but you hardly get to see the monster in a clear shot, er maybe just one. The monster moves around clumsily, rampaging through the city for no apparent reason, knocking down buildings, biting heads. (No, you didn’t get to see any severed heads, except for the Statue of Liberty head. Maybe the monster mission is to bite anything that resembles a head. LOL!) No information about what the creature is, where it might be from, or any speculation at all about it. None. Nil. Zilch. (I googled for images of the giant creature, but without much results. Hah!)

7. There is this one suprise (and confusing??) moment when this one girl, Marlena was bitten by this small creature (the monster’s little army?) and they walked into this one place that looks like a detention centre, army people moving around. Suddenly this Marlena started vomiting and crying blood. And you can see some movement in her stomach. Everybody go into panic mode, some military guys shouting “We have a bite!” — “We have a bite!”, then the Hazmat guys drag her away quickly. We can see her behind a curtain, expanding and popped, blood spattered everywhere. And that is it. You jumped to another scene. Well, I guess some movies just like that. You do not get to know everything. Why is that, why is this. What happened before. Not much explanations given, you just do your own conclusions, put all the pieces by yourself, ride along with the movie and enjoy it. After all, Why must everything be answered for you, heh?
