The Flaccid Mind

High Friday!

Prologue

The co-op was crowded with hungry students. Nub was standing nearby, behind Zaki thinking of what to eat. “Give me 2 curry puffs, 2 nasi lemak ayam and 2 cokes”, Nub heard Zaki barking his order to Limas. Then he saw Zaki gave Limas RM5 for the payment. “What is with the funny smile on his face??” Nob couldn’t help but curiosity got into him. Silently he observed the drama happening in front of him. Limas took the money, turned and went to the cashier machine, put in the RM5 and extracted out 3 RM10 notes and some coins and gave it back to Zaki. “What??!!!! Hey!! 2 curry puffs – RM0.40, 2 nasi lemak ayam – RM2.40 and 2 cokes – RM2.40, total RM5.20!!”Nub was pretty sure he saw Zaki gave RM5 note to Limas. Something fishy is going on. “I must confront Zaki and Limas at the hostel later”, Nub reminded himself.

Chapter 1: The Induction

“I saw what you and Limas did at the co-op”. Nub was washing his clothes at the washing counter and Zaki was standing next to the water tank, taking his shower. Hearing that, he stopped splashing water to his fat body. “What?” he looked at Nub. He hid his expressions well if he had any. “I know what you and Limas were doing at the counter. I saw he gave you some change when you should be paying more for what you ordered”. Nub stopped washing his clothes and now standing at the washing counter, looking at Zaki.

He is taller than Zaki and very thin probably because he did not eat his breakfast regularly. He always wake up slightly late then the rest of the hostel students. When people came back from the dining hall with breakfast, he was still taking his morning bath and not surprising when all the students were getting ready outside their class rooms for ‘Negaraku’ and ‘Ibu Pertiwiku’ songs and morning prayer, you would see Nob emerged slowly from the hostel and walking hurried across the school field to his classroom. Sometimes the national song and state song were played early and Nob ended up standing at the school field, alone. “So you don’t know about it?” asked Zaki. “What about it?” “We already doing it for couple of weeks now”, a wide grin formed on Zaki’s face when he said that.

Nub was not surprised. They were young and should not be selected to be co-op members. The temptation was high, dealing with huge amount of money at that young age. Nub was secretly stealing some money for himself when he thought nobody was looking. It was so easy, not getting caught doing it for the after few times doing it gave him more courage to keep doing it. “Well, I was pretty safe; look like Zaki and Limas never know I was doing the same thing myself all this while” Nub thinking to himself.

“So, just two of you in this?” Nub pressed for more details. “There are more, all the Form 1 co-op members, except AZ.” wider grin on Zaki’s face now. “Welcome to the club, Nub”, said the invisible voice behind Zaki’s head, audible only to Zaki. “Tell me more, I want to know the MO and who else in this”, Nub crossed his arms and getting ready to hear the revelations.
