Far away in South Africa, a country called Zimbabwe:
Robert Mugabe has made the extraordinary claim that ‘there is no cholera’ in Zimbabwe.
The President faced international criticism as he made the statement even as the toll rose to nearly 800 deaths and South Africa declared a border district a disaster area.
The United Nations said the number of deaths in Zimbabwe had risen to 783, with more than 16,000 cases.
But displaying his characteristic ability to interpret events differently from other observers, Mr Mugabe claimed the disease had been stopped.
In a televised speech at the funeral of an official from his Zanu-PF party he proclaimed: “I am happy we are being assisted by others and we have arrested cholera.”
Not far away in our backyard:
“During my time, the state Public Works Department, with the assistance of the Public Works Institute of Malaysia (Ikram), the Geology Department and the Drainage and Irrigation Department, provided reports every three months on hillslope conditions in Hulu Kelang,” Dr Khir said.
“This started after the last landslide in the area, which happened in Kampung Pasir in May, 2006.”
Dr Khir said the currenthousing area where the landslide happened was not approved during his tenure but more than 15 years ago.
He said during his tenure, the state had established a special committee headed by the state secretary to oversee all hillslope developments.
“There was no problem then. I don’t know what happened after the new administration came in,” Dr Khir said.
Not very long ago, also in our backyard:
Syed Hamid Albar: ISA is for protection
Speaking from Johor Baru this morning, Syed Hamid justified Tan’s detention under the ISA with a rare reason that it was as part of the government’s preventive measure ‘to ensure her safety’.
The minister claimed police intelligence have indicated that the journalist’s life came under threat after she reported an Umno division leader’s allegedly racist remarks.
“We have no intention of holding a reporter as after all she was just taking notes of the comments made by a certain party that led to a public debate.”
ps: Mugabe for Datukship? He’s promoting Malaysia, by saying things so much alike our politicians.
pss: A certain old man. Make it two old farts: “Police state? What police state?” Then came along a pink lips stooge: “Recession? What recession? All is good!”
psss: Okay.. okay.. it’s Friday. Couldn’t help to take a dig. Too delicious to miss. *grins*
