I agree with you bigtime, but …. employers too have a very valid concern here – although, it cannot be helped, if maids are to be treated like humans.

U know how randy these girls are – even if they’ve married 3 times by 25, with 4 kids.
People are just paranoid about having pregnant maids – becos they have frustrated maids who are dying for sex, and cheat on their employers and get jiggy at the first opportunity even if they don’t have “protection”.

The other scenario is the “part-time activity which they may indulge in – like the Filipinos who used to congregate at St. John Cathedral to be picked up. It actually brought about a Police raid on one Sunday (I think with the tacit approval of the Bishop who was sick of having the church become a pickup point).

we should be given the right to torture our maids..we should be given the right to enslave our maids… (unless they’re filipina of cuz..then we’re screwed)

but otherwise..if they’re from indonesia….we’ve got the right to do whatever we want to them…

heck..we have the right to not only abuse maids….if we’re of certain….. family of high position in the country, we even have the right to marry them…drug them…poke needles in them…abuse them sexually..why?..cuz we’ve earned the rights? (how exactly..i haven’t a clue though)

one very classic example. this fella has got this maid for almost 10 years. the maid became part of the family and can be trusted with the house key when the owner is away for holiday.

on the 10th year, she said she wants to retire and return to indon. on the very last day of her work, she opened the door for the robbers and ran away with everything in the house.

I have given my maids the week-ends off for yrs and they’ve been with me now for 9yrs….and guess what?! I still have all my jewellery and my maids r not involved in vice activities either!!!

Perhaps, we should get some of these employers to reverse roles with their maids for just 2 weeks as an experiment? Betcha, they’ll be singing a different tune then ))

I understand that Filipino maids are usually given the Sunday off, to go to church, then go out catch up with some R&R.

In the late ’80’s I saw many funny antics of randy malaysian males, who try to hit on them with lame pick up lines, sometimes they make me ashamed to be part of the malaysian male fraternity, see a pair of skirt and they become total morons…. eh ok that’s another story so I won’t sidetrack.

So why the double standards toward Indonesian maids?

I heard of one twit, who drives a high end german automobile, who will blare on his horn until his maid comes running out to open the gate- so one day his irate neighbour(whose children were often disturbed by the honking) one day told him “why dont you install automatic gate ?” The idiot replied ” no need what, why waste money, I got maid must give her work”. Malaysians dont understand irony or sarcasm, but that is also another story. (winking at Bong)

Stupid or what these people ? Of course all maids dont get the same off day and if they were in the malls on their own time not carrying squealing kids and 17 shopping bags, they may actually buy things, which by the way is good for our economy. No ah?

I have worked once continuously for 3 months without an off day and I can tell you I was tired and cranky, can you imagine them on a 2 year contract working 730 days non stop ? Summore they cannot show sour face, then kena scold again.

About those fearful of maids doing this and that, rob house la, bully chilren la, maids are human, you got the good and the bad just like malaysian citizens.

Life entails risks- If everything kiasu then no need to do anything lock yourself in the basement from the outside world.

Also ah,those parents who are embarrassed their children talking in Indonesian slang, dont glare at the maid, your fault- you did not spend time with your children, work long hours ok lah, what to do-cari makan, but after work spend time not gallivant here and there.

Also stop all this maid Agency scam, the levy and fee’s alone , take up nearly half of what they earn, cap the amount these bloodsuckers can charge for merely doing administrative functions.

As someone who has employed 3 maids the last 9 years, not all employers are scoundrels lah…..just as there are bad employers, there are also bad parents, bad husbands/wives, bad boyfriend/girlfriend, bad children, etc…….

By all means, implement whatever is necessary to safeguard the welfare of the foreign workers…..but don’t forget to balance that with adequate protection for the employers from being victimised, especially by the unscrupulous maid agents.

It’s also truly sad that the welfare of our locals, some who are in worst situation, have been cast aside.

The problem with your point is, you are stereotyping the maids, no? Most maids are ‘bad’ and when they are given liberty, they will do something bad. I do not agree.

I agree with your solution but it’s the maid’s decision whether to stay home to watch tv or go out. It’s a free country, she can go anywhere and mix with anyone she wants. She’s an employee, not a prisoner.

Actually, the maid doesn’t need to take a day off to ‘plan’ for anything. Sitting at home, with just her alone most of the time, she can ‘plan’ anything from home. Making calls, etc.

I’ve considered all points and I don’t see the justifications for denying the one day off a week and the reasons/excuses given still skewed, with the assumption maids are bad people.
