P212 – Sibu. Better do it right, Pakatan!

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010 1,349 views

Sarawak is a strong fortress of the establishment, Barisan Nasional. Heck, Sarawak (together with Sabah) saved BN from embarrassment last General Election by giving them enough seats to rule this country. BN already lost in Peninsular at that time judging from the popular votes BN 48% – 52% PR, the sentiment had switched to Pakatan Rakyat.

People of Sarawak are still immune to the change happening in Peninsular, and from the most recent by election held after the GE at Batang Ai, Pakatan Rakyat still has a lot of works to do in order to make wave in Sarawak. BN retained Batang Ai seat when its candidate Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, defeated PKR’s Jawah Gerang with an increased majority. Yes, increased majority. Pakatan Rakyat’s campaign for that by election is a total disappointment. I couldn’t even understand for what reason they chose Jawah Gerang as candidate in the first place. I wrote this in my previous post,

Why lah PKR chose Jawah Gerang as its candidate? This guy was the state assemblyman for the area for a freaking 5 terms! 20 over years! And we shall have him to bring ‘change?’ Niamah!

Nevermind that, we are now holding our breath over the latest political center of attention, Sibu. This seat is very important for both BN and PR. Why? Anyone who wins this seat, can confidently say it may have a greater, better chance to fare well in the coming state election and general election.

BN needs to win this seat to maintain its grip on its ’strong seat’ and to send a message to all Malaysians that it is making a comeback under the new political master and all the promised changes, mantras, KPIs, KRAs have struck a chord of acceptance among Malaysians.

PR needs to win this seat to make inroads to Sarawak. A win in Sibu will change everything. It will change the perception among people that only BN is the one and only choice for them. The perception that BN is mighty and will not lose. Just like before GE 2008, people thought it was impossible for BN to lose. People could not accept that change is possible. Who would have thought that BN would lose its 2/3 majority?

Before all this, every by election was won by BN easily without much sweat. No more of that, we have to make people understand change is a good thing. The elected party will work harder to earn its worth. We should not give our votes easily, make them beg if necessary. Just think, before all this happened, did BN ever talk about change? About reform? And now their leaders are talking about change and reforms.  Most still remain rhetoric but that is a start, to acknowledge the need for change and reform.

I am not a political analyst, I am not somebody to reckon with in politics, I am not someone with plenty of experience in politics, I am not even a member of any political party. But I have few things to say Pakatan Rakyat leaders if they want to have better chance of winning the Sibu seat, this coming by election.

1) Tone and direction of the campaign. Please don’t campaign like how you campaign in Peninsular. It doesn’t work. Forget about condemning Umno, MCA, MIC. When in Sarawak, talk about the component parties here. SUPP, PBB. Why talk about Umno? The party does not even operate in Sarawak. People here cannot relate to that.

People here most probably don’t find Umno so much a threat. Most threats are from the local parties, local leaders here. Better talk about Taib Mahmud. Or talk about Alfred Jabu ak Numpang. James Jemut Masing. George Chan. Robert Lau has passed aways, not so good to talk about him and he is very much loved figure among the locals when he was alive. Better, forget about condemning other parties if you can manage.

2) Please don’t make the campaign into another ‘condemn Barisan Nasional and its evil doings’. Have some class. Try to change the way you campaign. Some opposition parties have been campaigning that way since their existence, they know nothing but to whack, whack, whack and whack BN all the way.

People already know all the good things and bad things about BN. Talk about what Pakatan Rakyat can offer. Make it a campaign on ‘what Pakatan Rakyat candidate can provide as a representative of the people, the need for check and balance, what are the good things PR has carried out as a state government in Penang, Selangor, Kelantan, Perak (er….), Kedah.

3) Talk about issues that have immediate and obvious effect to the locals. Sorry but the political reality is, locals here cannot relate to Altantuya, TBH, PKFZ. So, touch on LOCAL ISSUES. Corruption cases, dirts by LOCAL LEADERS. Address the urgent, immediate problems of the locals. Local issues like flooding, land titles.

4) Work with local leaders. Let them take the stage. If possible use local dialects to engage the locals. In a predominant Iban crowds, find some Iban leaders to talk. Or speak some stammering Iban words. It will do wonders.

That is enough for now, I guess. All the best for the by election!

It is still not too late for me to say Happy Merdeka Malaysians! Well East Malaysians technically had their independence on September 16th, 1963 so let’s keep this Merdeka mood until September 16th yeah? Everybody happy with the arrangement? Not forgetting, to all my Muslim friends that started fasting since yesterday and going to do so for the rest of the month of Ramadhan – Selamat menjalankan ibadah puasa Ramadhan.

I was back in my hometown – Sarikei for the Merdeka weekends. I drove back to Sarikei on Saturday morning. A 6-hour journey, stopping twice, at Serian and Lachau. (Not Lanchau lah!) The next day I made a quick trip by bus to Sibu for another makan-makan gathering. Ehem, I attended few bloggers meets and the main agenda is always about food, so naturally after few meetings, yours truly received comments like “For some reasons he looked ‘well-fed‘ in this photo“.

I was in Sibu yesterday. Met up with STP, Huai Bin and Goolooloo. Originally I was there to meet STP, because I wanted to bash him up for ‘butchering’ my slimy lady’s fingers post :P I was back to Sarikei on Friday night, spent a day at home sweet home, the next morning went up to Sibu to ‘bash up’ STP.

Then STP told me he invited Huai Bin and Goolooloo aka Mary to join our little makan session (with STP sure makan lah what else? :P )  and I was more than happy to meet new friends. I arrived in Sibu around 8.45am, STP fetched me from the bus terminal and we headed for breakfast at Grace Cafe. I had this for breakfast, while waiting for HB and Mary to show up.

Dien Bien Hu aka Tien Pien Hu aka Dian Bian Gu… whatever they call it, it’s yummylicious!!

I finally had the chance to meet the legendary sixthseal.com’s blogger – Mr. Poh Huai Bin in person. I have been reading his blog for quite sometime since his ‘wild’ days. Cool guy I must say. (That’s all you can say about a guy in this blog.. say too much it may end up misinterpreted by some people.. especially when you have ehemm.. Drumstick, STP, Melbie, Man-D, Lola and Mar commenting.. Nyahahahaha!!) A very friendly, charming guy (that explained his persona among the girls heh??? :D Hahaha!) We chatted like old buddies, plus when you have STP around, you will never end out of topics to talk about. :D

Goolooloo was late  because ehem.. of some miscommunications, so we decided to go to STP’s favourite’s – Ruby Restaurant. I was craving for the Butter Scotch Prawns and man, you got to try it when you are in Sibu. Mouth watering..

Finally, Goolooloo aka Mary, the Taukeh-Nio came to meet us at Ruby Restaurant and we shall wait no more! Bring on the food!! I did not take any photo because my toy is… too small to bring out :D (Lucky Claire was not there..) So I pimped any photo I can get from HB and Mary.

Me and HB having beers.. er, a bit too early hahaha! – photo pimped from goolooloo.com

Yes, any amount of alcohol.. even a drop of it.. I went ‘pink’. But worry not, ehem.. I am very confident with my alcohol-tolerance limit. Bring it on :P

I was not blushing….

Sibulicious!! (Part 2) & Meeting Sibu Very Own Simon Yam

Monday, March 10th, 2008 542 views

I am back in town! Tired from the all travelling, but still in a state of euphoria after BN suffered their biggest lost since 1969. My very first thing do in the nearest future – ‘Deny Barisan Nasional A 2/3 Majority in the Upcoming Election!’ is accomplished! I am a happy man now! Worth all the craps and shits I took in all this while :)

Now let’s hope that the new government in Penang, Kedah, Perak and Selangor will do their very best, to prove that they are capable to bring better change to the states, for the people. I hope they do not disappoint the very people that entrusted their precious votes with them. Well if they do not perform according to the voters’ expectations, next election we shall kick their ass out to show our dissatisfactions, right?

Just a short summary of what I did for the past few days. (Yawn.. I wonder if anybody cares really :P ) I reached Sibu on Friday morning (7th March) at 9am and Suituapui fetched me from the airport. Suituapui is a very gentle, soft spoken, nice guy!!

Suituapui handsome face, revealed!! :P The most talked celebrity in blogosphere! (Cibol, pinjam gambar and your captions haha!)

We went to have breakfast and Suituapui brought me to this restaurant where I ordered ‘Foochow Fried Mee with Big Ass Prawns’ (Correct not Suituapui?). Need no to say, look at the photos , you can tell it is finger licking good!!!

Foochow Fried Mee with Big Ass Prawns!

Kopi O Peng Kao* to go with the noodle

The Aftermath

Then we went to Suituapui’s place and get cozy. *Wink wink! Until Cibol called and sms-ed, interrupting our get together moment, cis!! Kepoh** betul! Then we went for lunch at Ruby Café. Bengbeng was already there waiting for us to attack the food. ROTFLMAO! The food there is marvelous!! Just reading the title of the dish and imagine the food in front of you.. We had :

Butter Scotch Freshwater Prawns. Check out the size of the prawns!! Look at the creamy sauce! Feel it in your mouth.. :P They used butter and milk to prepare the rich creamy sauce. Slurrpp!! Sinfully delicious and fattening. Muahahahaha!

Got this photo from Cibol’s blog :D

And this from Bengbeng’s blog :D

Stirred Fried Cangkuk Manis (Sweet Leaf?). This is my all time favorite dish, when I go to market or groceries store, I will try to find this and cook it at home. I love it very much!

Cangkuk Manis – taken from Cibol’s blog.

Bitter Gourd fried with Salted Eggs

Fish Fillets cooked in Thai sauce – photo taken from Bengbeng

Pandan Chicken – photo taken from Bengbeng. I have no idea how they marinate it, the aroma, scented smell of pandan leaves blended together with the chicken, it is heavenly delicious!! The meat was so tender and yummy!!

Guinness Stout. No it is Ice Blended Coffee Suituapui’s Style. Yes, that’s the name, I am not joking. The coffee taste better than Starbucks and CoffeeBean!!! Hahahahaha!

We also had sea cucumber soup (didn’t have any photo with me :( ). Sorry about the photo quality. The photos do no justice to the lovely food. I took it using my mobile phone, under the dimmed lighting in the restaurant. Bengbeng should have better photos taken by his compact camera, but he yet to upload many photos when I checked his Flickr. So I just grabbed whatever photos I have from Cibol’s and Bengbeng’s blog heh!

After the wonderful feast at Ruby Café, Suituapui ‘passed’ me to Bengbeng because he had some business to attend to. I later joined Bengbeng for a swim, sauna and jacuzzi. We talked politics and many other things privy to only Bengbeng and me. *wink! wink! I had so much fun in Sibu with great friends like Suituapui and Bengbeng to bring me around and fill my stomach haha! Thank you very much Suituapui for having me around and not forgetting Bengbeng!! My utmost pleasure meeting you Suituapui and you again Bengbeng. One of the happiest moment to cherish and must not be forgotten! What is more happy than making new friends, meeting them and having great, delicious food to eat?!

More on happiest moment on the day of 8th of March and a not very happy day on the 9th of March in my upcoming posts! Stay tune!

p/s : Cibol is whoring himself for this Happy Moments contest, so go and give him some a hand!! (I am getting 10% commission for doing this.. muahahahahaha!
