What a way to start my Friday morning!
I was waiting for my morning bus when I received a sms from Suituapui.

Today is Friday, 8th of August, 2008 – 080808 aka 888! The number 8 for Chinese is a very auspicious number. The pronunciation of the word 8 in Chinese dialects is very similar to the word ‘wealth’, so you know why the obsession among Chinese people with this number.
Chinese are obsessed with numbers, often relating and making sure their phone numbers, wedding date, car plates, anything quantifiable to be a good number. If you ask me, how on earth a piece of plastic with the number 888 in front and back of your car can bring good fortune to you, I have no idea. Just because it rhymes with auspicious words?
Probably the only God that matters to many Chinese is God of Wealth and a big part of their life, being hardworking and slaving their ass all that is for one simple reason – chasing wealth = money. It is not uncommon to hear remarks praising Chinese people as ruthless, conniving, greedy and materialistic bastards. Hahahahaha! Such wonderful traits!
