English or Bahasa Melayu for Science and Maths?

Monday, November 17th, 2008 183 views

Warning: A long and wordy post. Brace yourself.

I had a long teh tarik session with Noktah Hitam and Aeropama on Friday night. It is a normal thing now, hanging out from 10pm - 4am. We bitched about many things that came to mind and oogled at girls at the same time. (yours truly did, not sure about those two.. I know they checked out a ladyboy sitting on the next table at one time :P)

One of the many topics we talked about was ‘English or Bahasa Melayu as medium for Science and Maths?’ Yes, we talked about such things over teh tarik, because we need to pretend we are smart people and care for the nation. We also talked about Nora Danish, Emilda Rosmila and cheongsamlover’s blog but I will spare you the unnecessary gossips. (We can always arrange for another teh tarik session for that)

This topic has been going around for so long, often politicised and used by self-serving politicians to fish for votes rather than serving the nation’s interes and looking at the bigger picture. Our fickle minded government and its famous policy of flip floping to gain popularity has caused many problems to students and parents. The government should stop toying with the future of the nation by experimenting with such important policy, treating students as guinea pigs. (Hear that Hishamuddin Hussein?)

I am agnostic on this issue. Both English and Bahasa Melayu language has its own advantages and disadvantages. I am actually advocating for finding ways to improve its implementation instead of doing another U-turn. Allow me to generalise here, by making blanket statements for both proponents and opponents for English or Bahasa Melayu as medium for teaching Science and Maths.

Miri, here I come!

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008 190 views

It is official.

I am relocating to the place where I have so many happy memories of my childhood and my youth (when I was young and horny), The Oil Town - Miri, Sarawak! It’s been a while since I visited the beautiful place. The last time I was in Miri, I was with a bunch of uni friends on their trip to tour Sarawak. Well, on my last trip to Limbang, I did stop by Miri for less than an hour, went to the town and had my lunch somewhere in front of Mega hotel and then back to the airport.

I brought my friends to Gua Niah, Miri City Fan, Open Air market (to see how some Sarawakians gulping down alcohol like water during broad daytime LOL! - that’s what they commented when we had lunch there), Sin Liang’s back lane strolling along the streets in Miri town and the craziest thing we did was travelling in a Perodua Kembara with 10 people. I have the photo somewhere, I need to dig it out when I have time and post it up. 3 persons sit in front, 5 person at the back, and another 2 person at the compartment area. Average size of my friends? Probably 65kg, 170cm+. I was considered average size compared to my friends that time. *ehem*

Imagine the look on my friend when he came to fetch us at the bus station with his Kembara. His first rentence ‘Ugh.. besai besai magang bala kaban nuan..’ (Your friends, all big size.. ). Now that I think about it, why didn’t we take taxi and save the poor Kembara from misery. LOL! Luckily only for short distance, from the bus terminal to my friend’s house. I still remember the bewildered (not amused) look from other drivers on the road, passing by our ‘congregation’. Priceless….

Confronting my devil

Friday, November 7th, 2008 97 views

I am a sarcastic person. I would be overly sarcastic when I am pissed off. Believe me, you don’t want to be on the receiving end when I am in that mode. At that moment, I would forget all my manners. Generally I think I am quite a good mannered person and you seldom see me get angry over things. Yes, I am not that angry person as you imagine by reading stuffs written by me in this blog. I am actually a very easy going person, I love plants and animals, I hug trees.. hahaha!

I would not hesitate to say things I should not say even to people that I love and respect. I tend to say the meanest things when I am angry. Personally I think it is more less hurtful to be told off directly than sarcastically, so the things I would say at that time are more hurting. Most of the time, I regretted what I said after I cooled down and evaluated my actions. More than not, I swallowed my egotastical pride and  apologised.

I got my Wordpress.com blog back! YoohooooO!!

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 52 views

I am freaking estatic! I am so farking happy!

The reason is… I got my Wordpress.com blog back!! Yes, you hear that right, my old ‘The Flaccid Mind’ is accessible again! Little walk down the memory lane for you that doesn’t know the story. I started blogging in Friendster, then ventured out to Wordpress.com free blog. Now that I can access the blog again, I found out I wrote a total of 133 posts between August 2006 to November 2007. I was not really that productive at that time. One fine day, when I tried to access the blog, I was shocked to be redirected to a page with a message
